What is a Circulator
The circulator is a three-port non-reciprocal device that transmits RF signals in a unidirectional sequence. Signals entering port 1 are transmitted to port 2, signals entering port 2 are transmitted to port 3, and signals entering port 3 are transmitted to port 1, with minimal loss in the forward direction and high isolation in the reverse direction. Circulators are primarily employed to separate transmit and receive signals in radar and communication systems, to protect sensitive receivers from high-power transmitter outputs, and to route signals between multiple ports with minimal interference. An ideal circulator provides lossless transmission in the forward direction while directing reflected or unwanted signals to a termination port, improving system efficiency and protecting critical components.
